Tour Details

Sleeping overnight at Everest Base Camp is an amazing adventure that brings together beautiful views, a tough physical challenge, and a chance to learn about Sherpa culture and high-altitude expedition life. This Everest Base Camp overnight trek lets you see the Everest region in a special way that very few people ever get to experience.

It is a rare chance to see the giant Himalayan mountains up close while you spend the night right at the bottom of the highest mountain in the world. In the past, only professional climbing teams were allowed to stay here, but now this famous spot is open to trekkers who want to explore the same paths as legendary explorers.

As you trek toward the camp, the Sleeping Overnight at Everest Base Camp itinerary allows you to pass through famous places like the busy town of Namche Bazaar and the beautiful Tengboche Monastery. These stops help you understand the Sherpa people and how they feel a deep spiritual connection to these high peaks.

The trek to the base camp is just as exciting as the finish line. You will see huge mountains, clear blue rivers, and colorful forests that change as you climb higher. The trails give you time to think and be amazed, especially when you finally see the huge Everest mountain filling the sky in front of you.

Once you arrive at Base Camp, you will get to feel the excitement of spending a night high in the mountains, surrounded by quiet glaciers and millions of bright stars. This is not just a normal trek; it is a life-changing experience that tests how strong you are and rewards your hard work with a very close look at the world’s most famous mountain. Staying here is a fulfilling experience for many. It gives you a great sense of pride and shows you just how powerful and magnificent nature can be.

Sleeping Overnight at Everest Base Camp: Reality for Trekkers Today

It is absolutely real, you can sleep at Everest Base Camp even if you are not a professional climber. In 2026, this is possible if you book a special “Sleep at EBC” package during the Spring season (March to May). While most trekkers must leave the camp by the afternoon to stay in lodges in Gorak Shep, this exclusive trip lets you stay behind on the glacier. Your journey starts with a scenic flight to Lukla and a trek through the beautiful Khumbu Valley, following the same famous trails used by the world’s greatest explorers.

At the base camp, you will live like an explorer, sleeping in strong expedition tents placed directly on the icy Khumbu Glacier. We provide professional, high-altitude sleeping bags to keep you warm in the freezing night air. You will eat in shared kitchen tents, and our guides monitor your health 24/7 with medical equipment to ensure your safety at 5,364 meters. Watching the stars come out over the world’s highest peaks is a physical challenge, but it is an emotional reward that few people on Earth ever witness.

What used to be a feat reserved only for elite climbers is now a premier bucket-list adventure for dedicated travelers. Sleeping overnight at Everest Base Camp lets you experience the true grit of expedition life and create memories that last forever. Because this trip requires special permits and massive logistics to keep you safe on the ice, it is a rare and premium experience that is very different from a standard lodge-to-lodge trek.

Why Sleeping Overnight at Everest Base Camp is the Best Experience

For many trekkers, Sleeping Overnight at Everest Base Camp is the highlight of the entire journey. Most trekkers only trek to the base camp, take a quick photo, and then have to walk away before it gets dark. But on this trip, you don’t leave. You get to stay and live on the giant Khumbu glacier. This allows you to see the high mountains in a way that regular tourists never see. Watch the sunlight change on the snowy peaks from the afternoon until the sun goes down, turning the white snow into beautiful shades of orange and pink.

The night is the most magical part of the trip. Because you are very high up at 5,364 meters, you are far away from city lights and dirty air. The result makes the sky above you incredibly clear. At night, you can look up and see thousands of bright stars, glowing planets, and the huge band of the Milky Way. It feels like you can almost reach out and touch the stars. It is one of the most tranquil places on Earth, where you can only hear the wind and moving ice. This is a view that only a few people in the world will ever see in their lifetime.

Waking up the next morning is something you will never forget. As you open your tent, you will see the “golden hour” when the first morning light hits the top of the giant mountains. Everything turns a bright gold color. Even though the air is very thin and the ground is freezing cold, the feeling of standing there is worth it.

It is a very big challenge that tests your strength, but it rewards you with a deep connection to nature. This isn’t just a simple trek; it is a life-changing journey that lets you live for one day at the foot of the world’s tallest mountain. You will go home with a sense of pride and memories that stay in your heart forever.

  • Safe Campsite: Tents are strategically placed in vetted, safe locations on the Khumbu Glacier.
  • Expert Oversight: Guides are professionally trained to spot early signs of Altitude Sickness (AMS).
  • Rapid Evacuation: Helicopter rescue can be arranged quickly in the event of a medical emergency.
  • Worry-Free Adventure: These rigorous measures allow you to enjoy the Himalayas with total peace of mind.

Best Time to Experience Overnight at Everest Base Camp

The best time for Sleeping Overnight at Everest Base Camp is during the Spring season (March–May). This is the only time the famous “tent city” exists on the glacier, as it coincides with the main climbing season. During these months, the weather is stable, and you will see beautiful blooming flowers along the trail.

While Autumn (September to November) is also a great time for trekking because the skies are very clear, the Base Camp itself is usually empty of tents. If you trek in Autumn, you will still see the amazing views, but you will sleep in a comfortable lodge in the nearby village of Gorak Shep instead of a tent at the camp. No matter which season you choose, it is very important to include 2 or 3 extra days in your travel plans. This is because mountain weather can often cause flight delays between Kathmandu and Lukla.

Meals and Accommodation During Your EBC Trek

Throughout your journey, we prioritize high-energy nutrition and secure lodging. From Lukla to Gorak Shep, you will stay in traditional mountain teahouses, which provide warm common areas, twin-sharing bedrooms, and a chance to experience Sherpa hospitality.

For the highlight of your trip, the night at Everest Base Camp, you will stay in premium, insulated expedition tents set directly on the glacier. These are equipped with high-performance sleeping bags designed for sub-zero temperatures, providing a cozy refuge in the heart of the Himalayas.

Our menu is specifically curated to maintain your stamina at high altitudes. You will enjoy various nutritious meals, including the legendary Dal Bhat (lentil soup and rice), pasta, noodles, and fresh vegetables.

Hearty breakfasts featuring porridge, eggs, and honey provide the fuel needed for the trail, while dinners are designed to replenish and warm you. In Kathmandu, we provide 3-star hotel accommodation with breakfast included, ensuring a comfortable transition both before and after your legendary ascent.

Essential Gear for Your EBC Adventure

  • Expedition Tents: Strong, windproof tents made specifically for sleeping on the icy Khumbu Glacier.
  • Warm Sleeping Bags: Professional bags rated for -20°C (-4°F) to keep you warm in the freezing cold.
  • Medical Kits: Full first-aid supplies and emergency oxygen are always ready if you feel unwell.
  • Health Checks: Guides use Pulse Oximeters every day to check your heart rate and oxygen levels.
  • Hiking Boots: You need waterproof boots with good ankle support that are already “broken in” (comfortable).
  • Layered Clothing: Bring a heavy down jacket, thermal layers, and a windproof jacket to stay dry and warm.
  • Sun Protection: Dark polarized sunglasses and strong sunscreen are a must to prevent snow blindness and burns.
  • Trekking Poles: These help you keep your balance on the ice and save your knees during long descents.
  • Communication: We use satellite phones or radios to call for a helicopter quickly if there is an emergency.

Packing Tips and Porter Guidelines for EBC

  • Weight Limit: The 10 kg/5 kg split is the strict requirement for the Tara Air and Summit Air flights to Lukla.
  • Porter Care: To protect our porters, they carry a maximum of 15kg per person. This follows international safety rules.
  • Baggage Type: Use a soft duffel bag. Hard suitcases are difficult for porters to carry and won’t fit well on the small planes.
  • Your Daypack: Always keep your down jacket in the small backpack you carry so you stay warm during rest stops.
  • Gratitude: Tipping is a local tradition to thank your crew; we suggest budgeting 10–15% of your trek cost to be shared among your guides and porters.

Trek Difficulty and Preparation for EBC

The Everest Base Camp overnight trek is moderate to challenging. You need to be physically fit and mentally strong, as you will hike for 5 to 8 hours every day on rocky and steep paths. The biggest challenge is the high altitude, where the thin air makes it harder to breathe and move.

To keep you safe, we include rest days in Namche and Dingboche to help your body get used to the altitude. Sleeping at Base Camp is even harder because it is very high and freezing cold. We recommend doing cardio exercises and hiking practice before you arrive. With a slow pace and a “never give up” attitude, you can reach this goal and sleep under the stars at the world’s highest mountain.

Transportation and Flight Contingency

Getting to the Everest region is an adventure, but mountain weather can be unpredictable. In the busy Spring and Autumn, most flights to Lukla fly from Ramechhap (Manthali) instead of Kathmandu. We take care of all the road travel to the airport for you. Because clouds or wind can delay these small planes, we strongly suggest adding 2 or 3 extra days at the end of your trip so you don’t miss your flight home. While you are trekking, we use professional porters and Yaks to carry your heavy gear. If regular planes are cancelled but it is safe to fly, we can often help you book a helicopter upgrade (at an extra cost) to stay on schedule. For your safety, we stay in touch with our team in Kathmandu 24/7, so a helicopter rescue is always ready if you get sick or too tired to continue.

Altitude Sickness: Symptoms and Prevention Tips

Altitude sickness (AMS) is a serious risk at high altitudes, so we prioritize your safety. Common symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and feeling very tired. To keep you safe, our guides perform health checks twice a day using a Pulse Oximeter to monitor your oxygen levels and heart rate.

To prevent sickness, you must drink 3 to 4 liters of water daily and eat plenty of healthy, high-energy meals. We also use “acclimatization days” in Namche and Dingboche to help your body get used to the thin air. If you feel very sick, we have emergency oxygen ready and can arrange a helicopter rescue if needed. By walking slowly and listening to your guide, you can safely enjoy sleeping at Everest Base Camp.

Travel Insurance and Emergency Support for Everest Base Camp Trek

Having travel insurance is the most important requirement for your journey. Since you are joining the specialized Sleeping at Everest Base Camp Trek, you must  must have a copy of your insurance before the trek begins. In the high mountains, a helicopter rescue is often the only way to stay safe if you get sick or injured. A decent travel insurance covers the high cost of the helicopter and medical expenses, letting you enjoy the beauty of Everest with total peace of mind.

Essential Permits for the Everest Base Camp Overnight Trek

To stay overnight at Everest Base Camp in 2026, you need two main permits and one special permission.

Mandatory Permits

  • Khumbu Local Permit: This is for entering the Everest region. You get this in Lukla. It costs about $23 USD (3,000 NPR).
  • National Park Permit: This is for the Sagarmatha National Park. You get this at the park gate in Monjo. It costs about $23 USD (3,000 NPR).

Special Permission to Sleep at EBC

  • Exclusive Camping Access: Standard trekking permits do not allow you to sleep at Base Camp. To stay overnight, you must book through a specialized trekking agency. They secure a specific permit that allows you to stay in an expedition-style tent on the glacier.
  • Spring Only: This special permission is almost always limited to the Spring season (March–May) when the climbing camps are set up.

Important 2026 Rules

  • No Solo Trekking: You must have a licensed guide to trek in the Everest region.
  • No TIMS Card: You do not need a TIMS card for Everest; the local permit replaces it.
  • Carry Cash: While some permits can be paid by card, it is best to have NPR cash ready at the checkposts in Lukla and Monjo.

Cultural Respect and Sustainable Trekking Practices

  • Respect Local Customs: The Khumbu region is the sacred home of the Sherpa people. Always walk to the left side of prayer wheels and sacred stones.
  • Temple Etiquette: When visiting temples like Tengboche Monastery, wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
  • Photography Guidelines: Ask permission before taking photos of monks or inside holy buildings.
  • Plastic-Free Trekking: Plastic water bottles are banned; use a refillable bottle with water purification tablets.
  • Leave No Trace: Carry all your trash back to the city to minimize environmental impact.
  • Preserve Nature and Culture: By respecting local traditions and keeping the mountains clean, you help maintain the beauty and sanctity of Everest for everyone.
Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Kathmandu (1,345 m)

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you are welcomed by the vibrant energy of Nepal’s capital and transferred to your hotel, the heart of trekking culture. This day is for recovery and adjustment. In the evening, your guide conducts a detailed briefing on the route, safety protocols, and altitude awareness. You can explore local markets for last-minute gear before the journey begins. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 2Fly to Lukla & Trek to Phakding (2,600 m | 4–5 hrs)

Your adventure starts with a beautiful 30-minute flight to Lukla. Note: In busy months, you will first take a 4-hour drive to Ramechhap to catch your flight. After landing in Lukla, you begin your trek with an effortless walk downhill. You will follow the Dudh Koshi River and pass through quiet Sherpa villages and over high suspension bridges. This first hike takes about 4 to 5 hours and gives you a great first look at the giant mountains. The day ends in the peaceful village of Phakding. Here, you can relax in a warm teahouse, enjoy a hot meal, and get ready for the exciting days ahead. Overnight in a teahouse.

Day 3Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,450 m | 6–7 hrs)

Trek along the scenic river and climb through pine forests into Sagarmatha National Park. Cross the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge over the Dudh Koshi River. Enjoy your first view of Mount Everest. End the day in Namche Bazaar, a lively Sherpa town with markets and teahouses. Overnight in a teahouse.

Day 4Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar (3–4 hrs)

To adjust to the thinning air, you take a short but steep hike to the Everest View Hotel (3,880m). This offers a stunning panorama of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. You return to Namche for the afternoon to explore the Sherpa Culture Museum or local bakeries, allowing your body to adapt safely. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 5Trek to Deboche (3,720 m | 6–7 hrs)

Leaving Namche, the trail contours high above the valley with spectacular views before descending to Phunki Tenga for lunch. You then climb through rhododendron forests to the famous Tengboche Monastery. After visiting this spiritual landmark, you descend slightly to the quieter, forested village of Deboche for a peaceful night. Overnight in a teahouse.

Day 6Trek to Dingboche (4,412 m | 5–6 hrs)

Today the landscape becomes alpine and rugged as you climb higher. You will pass through Pangboche, a village with one of the oldest monasteries in the area. The trees vanish as you ascend, giving way to open valleys and fields surrounded by stone walls. Dingboche sits beneath giant peaks and offers wide, beautiful views of the Himalayas. Because the air is thinner, it is essential to move slowly to save your energy. This calm village is the perfect place to rest and let your body adjust to the height. Overnight in Dingboche.

Day 7Acclimatization Hike to Nangkartshang Peak (5,083 m | 5–6 hrs)

Today serves as a crucial rest day to assist your body in adapting to the high altitude. You will take a steep but beautiful hike up to Nangkartshang Peak. From the top, you will see incredible views of giant mountains like Makalu and Ama Dablam, as well as massive glaciers. Climbing above 5,000 meters today is the best way to prepare your lungs for the Everest Base Camp trekking adventure. After enjoying the view, you will head back down to Dingboche to rest and drink plenty of water. This hike is the secret to safely reaching Everest Base Camp without getting sick. Overnight in Dingboche.

Day 8Trek to Lobuche (4,910 m | 6–7 hrs)

Today you will trek higher into the Khumbu Valley. Along the way, you will pass stone monuments built to remember brave climbers. The path becomes very rocky and icy as you get closer to Lobuche. It will feel much colder and the wind can be intense here. Lobuche is a small village with simple rooms and amazing views of the giant mountains. Overnight in a teahouse.

Day 9Trek to Gorak Shep (5,140 m | 7–8 hrs)

Today is a tough but exciting day of trekking. The path goes up and down over the rocky Khumbu Glacier. As you reach these high altitudes, the air becomes thinner, and every step takes more effort. You will stop at Gorak Shep, the last village before Base Camp. The land is frozen and wild, showing the true power of the mountains. You will spend the afternoon resting and hydrating to prepare for the big day tomorrow. Overnight in a teahouse.

Day 10Kala Patthar & Overnight at Everest Base Camp (5,364 m | 6–7 hrs)

Very early in the morning, you hike up to Kala Patthar for the best close-up sunrise view of Mount Everest. After descending, you trek across the rocky glacier to finally reach Everest Base Camp. Reaching this famous spot is an emotional achievement. Instead of leaving with the crowds, you will spend the night in a tent right at the base camp, surrounded by giant ice towers and climbing history. While the high-altitude trekking experience in Nepal makes it hard to sleep, the feeling of being here is unforgettable. Overnight at Everest Base Camp.

Day 11Trek to Pheriche (4,371 m | 6–7 hrs)

After enjoying a final sunrise at Everest Base Camp, you begin your trek down to Pheriche. The trail takes you back across the Khumbu Glacier, passing Lobuche and the stone memorials for climbers. As you go lower, the air becomes thicker with more oxygen, and your body starts to feel much stronger. Pheriche is a peaceful village in a wide valley surrounded by big peaks. It is a great place to rest and recover from the high altitudes of the last few days. Overnight in a teahouse.

Day 12Trek to Namche Bazaar (7–8 hrs)

Today you trek further down the mountain, following familiar trails through forests and over big suspension bridges. You will pass through the Tengboche and Pangboche villages, where you can see beautiful monasteries and mountain views one last time. As you go lower, the air has more oxygen, making it much easier to breathe and walk. Reaching Namche Bazaar feels wonderful because there are more shops and comforts. It is the perfect place to rest and get ready for your last day of trekking tomorrow. Overnight in a teahouse.

Day 13Trek to Lukla (2,800 m | 7–8 hrs)

Today is your last day of trekking. You will trek through green forests and small villages along the river. The air is warm and easy to breathe now. After crossing the last bridges, you will reach Lukla in the afternoon. Tonight, you can celebrate with your Everest Base Camp trekking adventure guides and porters. Overnight in a teahouse.

Day 14Fly back to Kathmandu (30 minutes)

Early this morning, you fly from Lukla back to the city. You will see the big mountains from the plane one last time. Once you land, we drive you to your hotel. You can take a hot shower, rest, and eat a delicious meal in the city. Overnight in a hotel.

Day 15Extra Day or Sightseeing in Kathmandu

We keep this as an “extra day” in case your flight from Lukla is delayed by mountain weather. If you arrived yesterday as scheduled, you can use today to visit Kathmandu’s famous cultural sites, like the Swyambhunath (Monkey Temple) and Pashupatinath, or go shopping for souvenirs. It is a relaxing day to recover and explore before you head home. Overnight in a hotel.

Day 16Departure

After breakfast, we will drive you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your flight home. Your incredible adventure comes to an end. You leave Nepal with unforgettable stories and the rare achievement of sleeping overnight at Everest Base Camp.

FAQs: Sleeping Overnight at Everest Base Camp
  • Can I charge my phone or camera at Base Camp? There are no power outlets at the camp. Please bring a large power bank (20,000 mAh or more). Tip: Keep your batteries inside your sleeping bag at night, as the extreme cold drains them very fast.
  • What happens if I get sick during the night? Our guides are with you 24/7. If you show signs of serious altitude sickness, we provide emergency oxygen and will immediately help you walk down to a lower altitude or call for a helicopter rescue if needed.
  • Is the drinking water safe in Everest Base Camp?Yes. We provide water that has been boiled or treated to make it safe. Never drink untreated water from streams or melting ice, as it can make you very sick.
  • What kind of food will I eat at the camp?We serve hot, high-energy meals like soups, pasta, and rice prepared in our kitchen tent. Eating well is very important to help your body stay warm and strong in the thin air.
  • What do the sleeping arrangements look like? You will stay in a strong, professional tent made for extreme weather. These are set up directly on the rocky and icy ground of the Khumbu Glacier.
  • Will I lose weight on this Everest Base Camp Overnight Trek? Most people lose between 3 and 5 kg (7–11 lbs). This happens because you are trekking every day, your body is working hard to stay warm, and you may feel less hungry at high altitudes.
  • Can I drink alcohol at Base Camp? No. Drinking alcohol is very dangerous at this height. It dehydrates you and makes it harder to breathe, which greatly increases your risk of getting altitude sickness.
  • Do I need to use oxygen to stay at EBC?Standard trekkers do not need oxygen to walk or sleep. However, we always keep emergency oxygen tanks at the camp just in case someone becomes very ill.
  • Should I bring my sleeping bag?We provide professional -20°C-rated sleeping bags. You do not need to bring your own, but many trekkers like to bring a small "silk liner" to put inside our bag for extra cleanliness and warmth.
  • Are there showers at the camp? No, there are no showers on the glacier. Most people use wet wipes or a small bowl of warm water provided by our team to stay clean.
  • Do I need to carry my tent? No. Our porters and yaks carry everything. Your tent will be set up and ready for you by the time you arrive at the camp.
  • How cold does it get at night? It is freezing. Your sleeping bag must be rated for at least -20°C (-4°F). Even in the spring, nighttime temperatures on the glacier are very extreme.
  • Is it hard to breathe at 5,364 meters?Yes. There is 50% less oxygen here than at sea level. You will feel out of breath even while sitting still. This is normal; just move very slowly and follow your guide's advice.
  • What are the toilet facilities like?We use private toilet tents with a special waste collection system to keep the glacier clean. There are no permanent or flushing toilets at the camp.
  • Is there internet at Base Camp? There is no free WiFi. You can buy Everest Link data cards or use a local SIM card, but the signal is often very weak and slow because of the high mountains.
